Overall Purpose of Job

  • Assure and establish proper controls and procedures, and manage systematic and human resource performance to provide for accurate and timely accounting for the Company and all its subsidiaries, performed under GAAP and in line with applicable FAS pronouncements, as well as in compliance with regulatory statutory and accounting requirements.
  • Assure the company’s ability to generate and produce timely, accurate and audited financial statements – without exception. Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting rules, regulations and timelines, as well as meeting specified regulatory, financial, and/or other owner requirements on timelines and information to be generated.
  • Provide guidance to a staff that can generate and produce timely, accurate and strategically aligned budgets and forecasts – up to 5 years out – including the direction and coordination of the entire process throughout the company (inclusive of building the proper models and financial and economic analytical tools).
  • Do all of this on time, on budget, and with limited use of outside resources, and hire and identify the right resources, as necessary, to get all this done on strictly-adhered-to monthly deadlines or other deadlines as established by the CFO and/or the ownership group.
  • In reporting to the Chief Financial Officer of SourceGas, the Controller will partner with departmental / business directors for the purposes of identifying and ultimately achieving company goals and advancing business objectives. As a critical driver of the business and as a member of the management team, the Controller will further the establishment and ongoing evolution of the organization’s accounting principles, practices, and procedures for the maintenance of its financial records, as well as the preparation of its financial reports. In designing and building an Accounting and Finance environment characterized by relentless accuracy and unwavering timeliness, the Controller (along with the Assistant Controller, to be hired by the Controller) will hold individual managers accountable for meeting high expectations in the areas of corporate accounting, property accounting, cost accounting, financial reporting, forecasting, and budget preparation. Successful performance of the position must be reflected in satisfactory operating results including but not limited to minimization of costs, strict adherence to budgets, departmental timeliness in both the monthly and year-end close, precision accuracy within the reporting function as a whole, early assessment and leverage of growing financial trends, and the identification and subsequent leveraging of increased profit opportunities.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Meet the high expectations of our executive and ownership groups.
  • Leveraging your expertise and proven track record within an SAP platform environment, you will manage the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements reporting.
  • Regularly measure and report on the financial and operating performance of individual departments and operating areas of the company to ensure the accurate accounting for the financial and operating performance of the company as a whole.
  • Take ownership of the annual budgeting process and drive departmental adherence to the budget throughout the fiscal year.
  • Establish tools, procedures, and a culture of heightened expectations in order to create a "no surprises" Accounting and Finance environment in which budget benchmarks are regularly tracked and variances explained, and in which presented numbers are consistently reflective of true company performance and are accurate and predictably stable as possible
  • Ensure the timeliness of the monthly close by growing the skills and accountability of your Accounting
  • Work closely with the Regulatory Affairs team to ensure that needed information is provided in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure accounting and reporting compliance with GAAP guidelines and state regulatory compliance.
  • Manage and direct the on-going SOX related program and standards in connection with requirements (note, however: we are a private company - prepare as if we are a public company-to-be)
  • Through ongoing education and training, you will increase company-wide awareness and "user-friendliness" of the full functionality of the SAP platform, including but not limited to reporting capabilities germane to each department’s core functionality.
  • Oversee daily operations of the accounting department including but not limited to Accounts Payable, Operational Accounting, Cost Accounting and Property Accounting.
  • Supervise the development and preparation of models, financial outlooks and financial forecasts, for both short- and long-term forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with government and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Provide staff development to team members to perform their functions more effectively and support managers in providing oil and gas instruction/ fundamentals to employees.
  • Coordinate with management and operations to develop and improve accounting policies, procedures and information flow.
  • Work with department managers and corporate staff to develop and implement key business processes and appropriate controls.
  • Direct financial audits and follow through on recommendations for the ongoing improvement of procedures and controls.
  • Actively participate in the preparation of vendor and customer service level contracts and ensure there is a system in place for monitoring and implementation.
  • Ensure key policies and procedures are documented to satisfy internal controls and audit requirements.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Masters degree preferred.
  • CPA required.

 

Job Requirements

  • Regulated utility experience is a must.
  • Advanced to "expert" level of familiarity operating within the SAP platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and maintain cost controls.
  • Proven history of leadership in managing the financial success of an organization as it relates to both the management of people ("managing the managers") and the management of process.
  • Understanding of the natural gas business and the integration of the Accounting department into the "big picture" (emphasis on an understanding of transmission, storage, and retail distribution).
  • Ability to balance the use of financial modeling in the planning process with the ability to then actively manage the people and processes necessary to successfully manage the resulting plan.
  • Public accounting experience strongly preferred; "Big Four" experience ideal.
  • Knowledge of FERC accounting rules and accounting standards helpful.
  • Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley regulations and compliance desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of GAAP.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and tariff requirements.
  • Comfortable with report writing tools and Microsoft Access database is desirable.
  • 10 years of business experience, with a minimum of 5-7 years in a senior-level accounting position successfully driving the performance of a team of professionals.
  • An unwavering demand for accuracy within a deadline-driven environment is critical.
  • Sound understanding of and commitment to maintaining a system of internal controls.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office suite (specifically Excel and Word) is required.
  • Organizational ability to handle multiple projects and effectively prioritize work assigned to the Accounting team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and positively on cross-functional teams, supporting team and company goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Presentation skills ranging from a one-on-one coaching environment to scalable presentations to executive and board teams.
